Introduction
Molecular imaging is the visualization, characterization and measurement of biological processes at the molecular and cellular levels in humans and other living systems. Molecular Imaging typically includes two- or three-dimensional imaging as well as quantification over time. The techniques used include radiotracer imaging/nuclear medicine, MRI, MRS, optical imaging, ultrasound and others. (Source)
Small-animal or preclinical imaging provides a noninvasive means of assaying biological structure and function in vivo, yielding quantitative, spatially and temporally indexed information by noninvasive means. The clinically translatable, noninvasive, and quantitative nature of small-animal imaging makes it an invaluable component of modern biomedical research.
Among the different imaging modalities, nuclear medicine-based techniques (positron emission tomography [PET] and single photon emission computed tomography [SPECT]), optical imaging (OI), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI), and ultrasound are the most suitable for non-invasive in vivo imaging.
